So, after re-acquainting with an old high school friend…I discover that he is very active in metal detecting.  He's on the Treasure Quest forum and we hadn't seen or heard from each other since 1980.  But, we picked up right were we left off and he seemed to spark an interest in this new hobby.

I have an old metal detector I won in a raffle about 15 years ago…..(never used) and decided to try it out because it sounds like fun. The dear wife and I took it to a little park near our house and low and behold, not only do I find two dimes and a penny, but my second find was what appears to be a wedding ring. Now, I know it might not be real, but I can see some numbers inside the band. (And it looks nice……so my story at this point is I’m money ahead!! LOL)

Dear wife and I start talking about the fun we had….and we decide to go ahead and do more of this. Well, to me (the typical man)…that means a green light on an updated detector! Of course, I’m savvy enough to quickly realize that dear wife will not be amused for long by simply carrying the shovel and doing the digging. So, upon reading many reviews and becoming a You-Tube expert (where everyone finds gold rings, nuggets, and large silver coins…..) I take the plunge and spend most of our tax refund on a pair of detectors. (Happy father’s day and mother’s day? LOL)

Since I already know dear wife isn’t going to want to be out in the rain, the cold, wading through rivers and streams and such, (I will refrain from calling her a slacker just in case she ever reads this!) so I went with the Garrott AT Pro for myself, and got the BOGO deal through KellyCo and picked up the Bounty Hunter 505 for her to start with. All is well at this point……

However....yesterday while I was at work, I get a text….”A package for you arrived.” Ooops…..I don’t think I told her yet what I had done. Hmmm…….sometimes it’s better to ignore things and claim ignorance…..but I haven’t claimed to be a genius and made a near fatal error. “Just one package?” I typed back. As soon as I punched send…..I realized I just goofed.

I’m expecting a package with the Garrott pointer I'd ordered to arrive first.  But, that’s when the picture she sent of the box came through…..the BIG box with the two detectors. (I’m sooo busted!)

Upon getting home last night, I survived only because she is indeed mildly interested in this new activity and although somewhat miffed that I didn’t tell her about it…..likes her new toy. (WHEW !!)

After opening and assembling everything…..I ask her, “So, want to go try out the new detectors?” (Note: it wasn't quite raining, but its sprinkling pretty good and we live in Minnesota, and it’s early April……and the temps are just slightly above freezing.) Thankfully, she declined going out as it may have dampened her early enthusiasm. But, I took out the AT Pro and proceeded to discover just how much junk is at that park.

I didn’t spend long as I only had an hour or so before dark. But I did manage a dime and 3 pennies amongst the trash. With what I’ve spent so far…..I figure at this rate, I’ll have to live another 143 years to pay off our equipment!

I'll add to this from time to time and hopefully give you a few smiles as we stumble around seeking the mounds of gold and silver that everyone on You-Tube seems to find. (Or maybe I'll just start keeping all the bottle caps and pull tabs I find!)

Very enjoyable story! More rings and silver things will come. Also, come to our club meetings AND bring the wife because she'll see several other interesting couples, kids too. We might have warned you to trust our patron ("saint"?) Tom Myhre of Mpls Metal Detectors for better deals, pinpointers, etc. But hey you'll learn, meetings are 3rd tues of each month at the New Brighton Eagles club.

Thanks for the invite. Dear wife can't make it this month, but I'm hoping I can.

Do try to get both of you to as many meetings as possible and get a family membership in the club, We have our main club hunt in July and it is a heck of a lot of fun, very enjoyable weekend. But you have to be a active member and attend a certain number of meetings to be able to participate in the main hunt.

This is assuming you live close enough to the Twin Cities to come to meetings.

Some firsts.

Dear wife and I did indeed crawl out of our nice warm bed and after taking care of the chickens and having breakfast....went out with both detectors.

This was my second outing with my AT Pro....but she hadn't even watched her owners dvd for her machine until breakfast time....so I knew she would take a bit to even begin to have any success.

We started at a small park....but was way too trashy for either of us to have any success in learning our machines. So, I took her to the local middle school. She was frustrated for a long time until she finally started putting things together.

I ended up with $1.37 (my first quarters). Dear wife found a coin spill with several pennies and also found a dime and a quarter. More importantly, she didn't get discouraged and wants to go out again later today maybe.

So, a pair of detectors....while expensive, results in fun experiences for both of us.

So far....it's a win!
